Ever wondered the reason why women’s underwear comes with a small inside pocket?
We will tell you the story of this little pocket that you see in the crotch of your undies. First of all, in the sewing world, we have given it a name; we call it a gusset.
The gusset has a specific purpose and it is always sewed on the crotch. When it comes to selecting the best material to use we would focus on natural fiber such as cotton, bamboo or hemp avoiding synthetic fabrics at all cost!
And doo you know the reason why? Well, one of them would be because it does promote the proliferation of bacteria which natural fibers would not do.
This small underwear pocket has a specific function.
At first, this might look like an insignificant piece of fabric but the gusset is actually very important for the below reasons:
- It reinforces the underwear, by adding an additional layer in the crotch area. This is the part of the underwear that often gets “abused” when washing by hands. How often have you not tried to get rid of a stain by squeezing the fabric? Usually the gusset gets damaged easily and the fabric might become thinner over time.
- Adds extra comfort and padding.
- It keeps you cool and protect your skin to be in contact with the rest of the underwear fabric. Some are synthetic.
All our Bimba’s underwear come with a cotton gusset, making them antibacterial.
Do all women’s undies come with this pocket, gusset?
Well, this would depend on the brands. If you buy a brief made of a synthetic fabric that has no gusset, you might want to consider return it to the store or sew a gusset on top.
What are the risks, “it’s just a pocket’ you might say.. If you decide to use it, this is likely that you will feel uncomfortable, you will sweat more and will potentially feel itchy in this area.
What do we do, as a women’s underwear company?
Some brands that are already making a brief made of natural fabric like cotton would not always add a gusset. This is for the silly reason that this is faster when sewing and obviously lowering the costs.
Bimba’s underwear always come with a slightly thicker gusset as we focus on designing the best product. We want you to feel comfortable in your undies.
So now you know why this little pocket matters!
